Varicose Veins

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a common condition where the veins, particularly those in the legs, become swollen, twisted, and enlarged. They can be large, ropey, and appear blue or purple in color. This condition occurs when vein valves, which help blood flow up the legs and toward the heart, become weak or damaged. This causes the blood to flow back with gravity and pool in the vein, leading to the appearance of varicose veins.

Visible varicose veins are most often caused by leaking and incompetent valves in the saphenous veins, which are just below the surface of the skin. This allows the blood to leak down into the smaller veins in the lower legs, leading to high vein pressures and enlargement of the veins over time.

Varicose Vein Symptoms

In addition to their appearance, varicose veins can also cause a range of unpleasant symptoms and side effects, such as:

  • Heavy and tired legs
  • Aching and throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Leg cramps
  • Restless Leg Syndrome

Phlebitis is the inflammation of a vein and is characterized by a warm or painful varicose vein.

Heredity is a primary factor in over 80% of varicose vein cases, Other contributing factors may include pregnancy, obesity, hormone therapy, standing or sitting for long periods of time, and injury.

Diagnosis and Evaluation

We use a stepwise approach at Region Vein to diagnose, evaluate, and treat varicose veins. An ultrasound study of the legs is conducted to identify the problem, and once the bad veins are identified, various treatment options are discussed.

Treating Varicose Veins

At Region Vein, we offer patients a range of varicose vein treatment procedures that aim to eliminate veins with unhealthy valves. Blood circulation then returns to the veins with properly working valves, and the closed veins are eventually absorbed back into the body.
