Region Vein Welcomes You!
Demetrios J. Karamichos, MD, RVT, RPVI, DABVLM, recently launched Region Vein, a medical practice committed to the non-surgical treatment of varicose vein disease and related disorders. Region Vein is located in the heart of Munster, Indiana, close to the intersection of Calumet and Ridge Road. Dr. Karamichos received his medical degree from University of Illinois at Chicago and completed his residency at MacNeal Memorial Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois.
In 2009, Dr. Karamichos was one of the first physicians in the nation to be certified by the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Before launching Region Vein, Dr. Karamichos practiced vein disease treatment at one of the largest vein treatment networks in the nation. His practice rapidly grew, becoming the leading expert for vein care in the Northwest Indiana region.
Pain, heaviness, fatigue, itching, restless leg syndrome, ankle swelling and muscle cramping can all be signs of vein disease. The symptoms may temporarily improve with leg elevation, pain medications or compression socks but they typically recur and can cause other significant health problems like leg sores, discoloration and poor healing.
Heredity plays a major role in varicose and spider veins as does pregnancy, hormonal changes or obesity. Up to 55 percent of women and 45 percent of men have some form of vein disease.
Treating Vein Disease
Region Vein offers state of the art vein treatment for those who suffer the pain and embarrassment of varicose veins and who do not want vein surgery. Dr. Karamichos says that unfortunately many people do not seek vein disease treatment or delay it for years. Many think treatment is only cosmetic and not covered by insurance. Today, there are many corrective treatment options available that do not involve surgery nor hospitalization.
“Until recently, surgical vein stripping was the standard treatment for varicose veins,” said Dr. Karamichos. “Now, among other treatments, we use Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation, a minimally invasive procedure done in the office.”
During this state-of-the art treatment, we use ultrasound to guide a thermal catheter into the affected vein, which then heats and seals it. Once the vein is closed, blood reroutes to healthy veins. Most people can return to their normal activity the same day. Sclerotherapy is another type of treatment that we perform for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons.
Region Vein Can Help
We are locally owned and operated and are very excited about opening our practice in the Northwest Indiana region. Dr. Karamichos decided to open this vein practice in order to focus more on individualized patient care and help his patients achieve healthier legs.
